First time (19 Nov)

Image
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Indeed, this quote rang true for the meeting that evening. Let's take a look at what happened this evening. The Prepared Speech segment, we had a total of 3 speakers. The first speaker was Bernard Kok. He just joined us a month ago and was doing his maiden speech this month. As they said, "strike while the iron is hot" and Bernard seemed to be doing so. The second speaker was Yong Chin. He's also doing his first maiden speech. The third speaker was Melissa about how to relax and wind down in a fast pacing life. Alvin, our club President, was the timer for the first time as well. In Toastmaster, regardless of your position, we provide a conducive platform for all to learn regardless of your position or background. The special training that evening was conducted by Vincent. He shared about tips and framework on how to make statistics interesting so people can remember and basics on good powerpoint present...

Respite in Oct (5 Nov)

Image
This is the first meeting of the month. It felt like a while since last month; our second meeting in October coincided with a public holiday. As many couldn't arrive on time due to the heavy downpour, the meeting had a little change in program.  We had table topics first instead as our first item of the evening. Our two guests (above) giving a shot at table topics.  Chiew Ping attempting table topics.   Jeffery, a visiting toastmaster, having fun.   Henry, a member, also trying out.  Gerald, the last contender for the evening.  Following next is prepared speech. This is where speakers who had spent precious time & effort to prepare their speech present their masterpiece to us. First up is Zaki, a visiting toastmaster. His speech was very entertaining, light-hearted and enriching. He had embedded message within this humourous speech, be your own self instead of following others. He was also...

Awards Night (1 Oct)

This evening's chapter meeting is one filled with pride, joy and happiness in the air. That's because we've received our official ribbon from Toastmasters International for the recognition of President Distinguished Club award.    Our President holding the official ribbon from TI. Of course, we must not rest on our laurels. We continue to work hard preparing for next year too. We have a total of 3 speakers for the evening.  Christina, kicked off the meeting. She explained the overview of the Toastmasters to new guests and led the audience on to the program of the evening. First up is Melissa; she just joined us last month and this is her maiden project. Despite her being fearful of public speaking, she had overcome her fear by taking it one step at a time. The trembling was obvious to the front people, but she kept her nerves and continue speaking. A tremendous attempt considering that she didn't hide behind the lectern like I did when I was doi...

This evening chapter meeting is a special one. Instead of the usual routine, we had Humourous and Evaluation Contest. A brief background for those who are new to Toastmasters. Every year, every club will conduct this contest to determine the most Humourous speaker and the best Evaluator from the club to compete in the Area's contest. The Area's champion will proceed on to Division level and the Division champion will cross swords at the District Level. Being crown the District Champion is the dream of many speakers. So back to our club contest. This evening's contest consisted of 3 participants for each category. For the first category, the Humourous Contest, we have Vanessa Chew, Robin Chiu and Vincent Chua. Since this is a contest, the Toastmaster title of each contestant is not announced to remain as a fair contest. The best contestant is being voted by the audience there that evening. Vanessa, the first speaker, shared about her graduation trip to Korea. She charm...
