Humourous & Evaluation Contest 2013 (20 Aug)

This evening chapter meeting is a special one. Instead of the usual routine, we had Humourous and Evaluation Contest.

A brief background for those who are new to Toastmasters. Every year, every club will conduct this contest to determine the most Humourous speaker and the best Evaluator from the club to compete in the Area's contest. The Area's champion will proceed on to Division level and the Division champion will cross swords at the District Level. Being crown the District Champion is the dream of many speakers.

So back to our club contest. This evening's contest consisted of 3 participants for each category. For the first category, the Humourous Contest, we have Vanessa Chew, Robin Chiu and Vincent Chua. Since this is a contest, the Toastmaster title of each contestant is not announced to remain as a fair contest. The best contestant is being voted by the audience there that evening.

Vanessa, the first speaker, shared about her graduation trip to Korea. She charmed and entertained the audience about her displeasure for "manicured flowers" where she almost snapped her friends neck as her friends snapped pictures at the theme parks.

The second speaker, Robin, shared about his habit that resonates with everyone in the room, the art of procrastination. He shared openly about his "habit" and how this habit turned out to be an item finder skill too. He found many items which he lost and couldn't find for a while.

Vincent, the last speaker, tickled the audience funny bone with the recent haze. He joked about how Singapore had been transformed into a new land with the haze and new attraction spots now available for locals and tourists.

The next segment of the contest is Evaluation Contest. In this arena, there will be a "guest speaker" from another club which all contestants have no knowledge of. The speaker will give a a 5 to 7 minutes speech and the contestants are given five minutes to think about what and how to evaluate the speaker.

For the contest to be fair, the other participants are being locked outside the room as the first evaluator gives his/ her evaluation to the speaker. Again, the audience will judge based on the value of feedback to determine the winner.

The first evaluator is Vanessa, followed by Pei Zhi and lastly Vincent.

And here's the results for the night.

Vanessa (above) won second runner-up for both Humourous and Evaluation contest.

Robin (above) won runner-up Humourous Speech Contest.

Pei Zhi (above) won runner-up for Evaluation Contest.

Vincent (above) won champion for both Humrous & Evaluation Contest.

Of course, we must not forget the people behind the scenes which helped make the entire contest as smooth as possible.

Christina (above), our Contest Chair, aka Emcee, for the evening.

Chiew Ping (above), organizing chair, overall in chrage of entire flow of program.

Hijazi (above), our guest speaker for the night.

Pei Zhi (left) and Clement (right), SAA and tally counters.

Mike (left) and Rajesh (right) are timers for the evening.

Last but not least, a group photo to wrap up the evening! Do join us for another round of fun, entertainment and learning on 3 Sept. Registration starts at 7pm! See you then.
