Success (23 May)
The evening's theme revolves around success and as such, the program for the evening revolves around it.
Chiew Ping kicked off the meeting with ice-breaker session followed by Alvin's President's inspiring opening address. We had the privilege of having Clement from James Cook University as our Language Evaluator for the evening.
The word of the day was "progress". And it fits in nicely with our theme since in order for us to achieve success in life was to made constant progression.
That evening, we also had the privilege and honour of inviting back our past member, Ben Ong, to be sharing with us his journey of life and what he had done to become successful.
Ben was the epitome of what we call continuous learning. At the prime age of 30+, he was retrenched from his work. But that didn't stop him. Instead, he switched job to sales and was promoted senior management level. When economic crisis hit, he was retrenched a second time. Undeterred by failure, he went to sign up for a Masters program and proceed on to become a realtor. A motivational speech that transcended the spirit of "never give up".
Moving on to our main course, prepared speech. We had a total of 3 prepared speakers.
First up is Robin. This is his maiden speech in this toastmaster journey. He had a very clear structure for his speech, wonderful vocal variety and good use of humour! Pretty amazing feat for a first timer!
Next up is our old friend Gerald. He's doing P7, Research Your Topic. His topic was on DSLR, his favourite hobby for the moment. Well researched, backed with numerous sources. Very detailed and has gotten many budding photographers to take that first step towards getting their first DSLR.
Vanessa left the audience in awe with her carefully crafted speech about priority seat. She pitched it in such a way it's a confession. Yes, you read it correctly, a confession. Albeit, not hers, the priority seat to be exact. Peppered with beautiful words and remorseful emotions, she made the audience hungry for more of her stage time.
Next up is Table Topics. Vincent was the Table Topics Master and he had some interesting topics up his sleeves.
First up was Laura, from Toastmaster in Australia. She recently moved to Singapore as her husband has been posted here due to work. She did a wonderful job especially when she has been out of action for about 6 months.
Next was Chun Kwang. He had improved over the months and he is no longer as nervous about speaking in front of a crowd after several attempts.
Rebecca, our incoming Area Governor, had the privilege of getting some quirky topics from Gerald. She managed to pull of the topic well if you asked the crowd. They responded with a huge laugh!
Clement also gave a try at the topics. Very well done as the topic he had was one of the tougher ones.
Coming up next was our evaluations segment. A total of 3 evaluators for the 3 prepared speakers.
Next up was Vincent who evaluated Gerald on his DSLR speech. (Apologies if no pictures were posted)
Last evaluator was Gerald, who deployed his favourite technique of using food and drinks to evaluate Vanessa's speech.
Our Language Evaluator did a wonderful job giving us insights on our language used for the evening and pointed out areas of improvement for us to work on. Only with that can we progress in the right directions.
To wrap up the evening, we had Siao Yan as our Ah Counter, who had been listening attentively to our pause fillers. Very attentive listener and very precise Ah Counter.
Last but not least, how can we forget our winners for the evening! :)
Do join us for our next session on 6 June, 7.15pm at our club. Stay tuned!
