Imbued with Love (7 May 2013)
Today's meeting was filled with learning,
laughter and love.
We learnt more about what everyone thought
about the recent Malaysia General Election when Vicky posed us a question on
this topic during the Ice-breaking session.
We learnt more about the word 'imbue',
which means to fill something/someone with a particular feeling, quality or
idea, from the Language Evaluator, Helen.
Our lovely Word of the Day!
And then, there were the four wonderful
prepared speeches from our members.
Chun Kwang shared with us his thoughts on
how to become a happy Singaporean. Mike convinced us that he absolutely hated
horror movies. Vanessa informed the audience on the merits of insurance and,
hopefully, lessened the fear associated with cold calls from insurance
representatives. Our last speaker cum club advisor, Gerald, persuaded us to
attend our very own club's bonding session after the regular chapter meeting.
It was a tie between Mike and Vanessa as both received the same number of votes
for the Best Speaker ribbon.

The table topics session, anchored by the
Table Topics Master Vicky, had us assume various situations when we had to give
a speech. Robin, Clifford, Chun Kwang, Patrick, Fion and Marcus gamely took up
the challenge to give us an impromptu speech based on the topics they chose. In
fact, the latter three speakers were first-time visitors to the club. They
impressed us (or at least, me) thoroughly with their ability to speak in front
of an audience with ease given the amount of time they had to think. In the
end, Marcus' effort was recognised by the audience as he received the Best
Table Topics ribbon.

Following the break, the audience,
especially the prepared speakers, listened attentively as the evaluators
enlightened us on the positive and not-so-positive aspects of each speaker.
Alvin, Gerald, Darryl and Ratna each took turns to take the stage, but there
was no voting for Best Evaluator.
The last highlight of the meeting was by
Helen in her capacity as the Language Evaluator. She based her report on 3W's:
Wonderful, Woeful and Ways to improve. Some examples of 'Wonderful' were
'leisure and pleasure' (words which have similar-sounding endings); the phrase
'get it when you don't need it' (usage of an anti-thesis); 'pace with purpose'
(usage of alliteration). Nonetheless, there were instances when the English
used was Woeful, as in the phrase 'I think that you are wonderful' (with the
word 'that' being redundant in this instance). Helen also suggested Ways to
improve by proposing the use of 'You have to buy insurance', instead of 'You
have to get insurance' so as to project a more precise meaning with the choice
of words used.
Whew, time flies and it was the end of yet
another chapter meeting! But the night was still young.. So off we went for our
bonding session :)
