Games Night (4 Sept)

This evening's session is both interactive and refreshing. Instead of our usual chapter meetings, we played games instead. Feedback from the audience was that they had a wonderful time that night!

During the first segment, we played Bingo as our ice-breakers. Our task is to go around the room and find people who fits the description of the things in the respective boxes and fill up their names. The first three to complete a straight line would win some prizes.

We then moved on to 3 station games. One station deals with facial expression, another is word game Boggle and last one is about food (after all, we're in Singapore, how can we miss out on this? :)

Quick snapshot of the participants playing games.

From clockwise: The Emotion Game, The Food Game, Boogle

The objective of the emotion game is to collect as many sets of cards as possible. Each player will be dealt with different cards at the beginning. Each time a player managed to complete collecting a set of cards, he/ she must do that facial expression to the person on the right to guess. If the next person guess correctly, he'll get 1 point while the player who collected the full set will get 2 points.

As you can see from the photo above, it's not that simple. Alvin was scratching his head trying to identify himself with the range of facial emotions described on the instruction card.

Here's what it looks like when you collected a set of identical cards.

Can you guess what emotion Rick is doing? :)

Some of you may ask, how does this relate to public speaking? Well, imagine a person telling you a serious fact about the World War II and smiling. Despite how serious he sounds, you would never take this speaker seriously primarily because he's smiling. Facial expression, couple with your voice and tone, makes up about 30-40% of your message of the speech! So wouldn't facial expression be worth honing?

The second station is food game. The objective is to complete the card on hand with the food presented on the table. It's more of a test of reaction and analytical skill, because there are some cards on table that would never fit your card on hand.

Here's a snapshot of the game.

So how does this tie in with public speaking. Truth be told, not directly. However, when it comes to quick eyes and reflexes, it's essential in impromptu speaking. How often are we caught in a sticky situation of having not known what to say or share when we're being thrown a random question that is out of our expertise? Well, I reckon this game is ideal for those who wants to train for better thinking reflexes and keener eyesight!

Last but not least, how can we not play the games that got to do with words? Another picture of participants in action!

The objective of the game is to clear the cards you've on your hand. In order to clear the cards, you need to form words on the table with the cards you have. So it's both about speed and vocabulary. After all, a good speech can't escape from having a range of vocabulary.

And of course, Vincent continued with his speech practice for the Area A2 Humourous contest. Feedbacks and comments were gathered from the ground to help Vincent further improve his speech.

The final segment of the program was a story game. All participants are given 3 - 4 words and we're supposed to complete the previous person's story with our given 3-4 words. To kick things up another notch, the speaker who had finished sharing would appoint a random person to continue his/her story. This way, no one would be able to prepare for it. Challenging isn't it? But fun it is!

It was a fun-filled night! If you want to join us in improving public speaking in a fun, supportive and enjoyable environment, do come down for our chapter meeting!

We also have a 6 months program installed for to help speakers improve their on stage appearance. It'll be facilitated and conducted by our advisor! So be sure not to miss out!  To find out more information, you can write in to our email under the "Contact Us" tab at the top.

See you at our next chapter meeting on 18 Sept!
