Braddell Heights Toastmaster Club 1

The evening's chapter meeting was the final meeting that concludes the term June 2012 to 2013. I'm glad to say it  was wrapped up in a light-hearted & entertaining session. Chun Kwang kicked off as SAA. This was his first attempt at being SAA and he did a fantastic job warming up the audience by asking them how they had celebrated Father's Day. Many shared about their celebrations and some were opened to share that they did not celebrate because of various reasons. Vincent took over as Toastmaster of the Evening and set the entertaining tone for the evening. It was followed up with the  President's opening address. Alvin shared an inspiring story with us that we have a choice to focus on the beauty of everyday even if life doesn't present itself that way. Siao Yan took over at the eleventh hour as the  Language Evaluator and gave us the Word of the Day, " Gusto ". Gusto simply means enjoyment, zest, energetic. And she encouraged us to use it ...

Tonight’s meeting was packed to the brim, with only a few empty seats dotting our usual meeting venue. We had the strict but humorous Fernando Young kickstarting tonight’s meeting with the ice-breaker question that was quintessentially in Fernando’s style: What do you love or loathe most about Fernando Young? The crowd was simultaneously tickled and energized by this topic. Off to a good start, the next item on the agenda was the introduction by our club’s very own Vincent Chua. He was the Toastmaster of the Day and he explained the different segments in a typical Toastmaster Chapter Meeting and its benefits, as well as the various appointment holders and the purpose that they serve. This is followed by our Club President Alvin Yong’s opening address, where he encouraged us to listen attentively, not selectively. The evening's theme revolves around success and as such, the program for the evening revolves around it. Chiew Ping kicked off the meeting with ice-breaker session followed by Alvin's President's inspiring opening address. We had the privilege of having Clement from James Cook University as our Language Evaluator for the evening.   The word of the day was "progress". And it fits in nicely with our theme since in order for us to achieve success in life was to made constant progression. That evening, we also had the privilege and honour of inviting back our past member, Ben Ong, to be sharing with us his journey of life and what he had done to become successful. Ben was the epitome of what we call continuous learning. At the prime age of 30+, he was retrenched from his work. But that didn't stop him. Instead, he switched job to sales and was promoted senior management level. When economic crisis hit, he was retrenched a second time. Undeterred ...

Today's meeting was filled with learning, laughter and love. We learnt more about what everyone thought about the recent Malaysia General Election when Vicky posed us a question on this topic during the Ice-breaking session. We learnt more about the word 'imbue', which means to fill something/someone with a particular feeling, quality or idea, from the Language Evaluator, Helen. Our lovely Word of the Day! And then, there were the four wonderful prepared speeches from our members. Chun Kwang shared with us his thoughts on how to become a happy Singaporean. Mike convinced us that he absolutely hated horror movies. Vanessa informed the audience on the merits of insurance and, hopefully, lessened the fear associated with cold calls from insurance representatives. Our last speaker cum club advisor, Gerald, persuaded us to attend our very own club's bonding session after the regular chapter meeting. It was a tie between Mike and Vanessa as both receive...
